AAUW Algona Branch Activities

  • Encourage young girls to pursue careers in science and math by recognizing students from Algona Middle School and Bishop Garrigan School who excel in these areas
  • Facilitate candidate forum discussions for those running for state and local offices
  • Host an annual book sale of gently used books at bargain prices at the annual Algona Craft Sale

 

  • Promote Women’s History Month by highlighting women who inspire us
  • Created the Women’s Networking Event that connects over 200 professional women
  • Support the education of women by giving scholarships to local students
  • Created the Algona Heritage Award, recognizing people who have given a  lifetime of service to our community
  • Sponsored Laura Belin, journalist for Bleeding Heartland; Statehouse reporter for KHOI Radio Ames, to discuss access to information and justice

  • Through projects such as the Paycheck Fairness Bake Sale, reminding the public that women still earn less than men for doing the same jobs.  Women should earn the same pay as men for doing the same job.
  • Planning and presenting “Voices from the Past,” a guided tour through Riverview Cemetery, featuring citizens who played prominent roles in the history of Algona
  • Attend public meetings with those who represent us in Congress, especially about the Paycheck Fairness Act
